Found Festive :: Felt-Ball-Garland-and-Burlap-Christmas-Tree-Skirt

We have not yet upgraded to a full size tree since we moved into our home. We figure that keeping the small "apartment tree" that we have had for the past 6 years works with an 20 month old that might just find it fun to remove every single ornament within reach. We went to our local Homegoods in search of a table to house our pretty little tree and found this wonderful black round table that will look good whether it has a tree on it or not. We still had a little problem, the not so pretty green plastic base of the tree that made it look a little less than put together. I got a piece of burlap from my stash (addiction to cloth) and used a few of the hundreds of plastic bags we have from grocery trips to fill in around the base and tied the burlap with some brown baking twine a few times. I LOVE the result. My own version of a "ready to be planted", Charlie Brown-esque tree.

I saw an idea for a felted ball garland that was more affordable both money and time-wise than its Anthropologie counterpart from last year. This garland seemed to be easy enough when I thought I would make the felted balls, but then I found the beauties below at my local Micheal's store and a light bulb went on! They were already made and most had holes in them for stringing onto a bracelet. So I went to work with some brown baking twine, knotting before and after each felted ball, and voila!

We're getting festive around here and enjoying all the Christmas preparations! Tonight it's letters to Santa at the North Pole...

I am a Pinterest addict and when I was browsing the other day I came across this lovely vintage suitcase DIY project via Design Sponge. I fell instantly in love and realized I have the perfect vintage suitcase sitting in my living room right now! I have to get up the nerve to drill holes in this pretty little thing... so we shall see if it comes to fruition or not. I love vintage items so much that I hate to alter them. I'd rather restore them. Coming up in the next few weeks we'll have a "fashion show" of sorts. I'm thinking of showing off all of my vintage fashion finds that I can now fit in once again "post-baby". The city I live in has a gold mine of vintage skirts... I live around a lot of really nice vintage ladies that donate their vintage clothes to goodwill. Are you up for a vintage fashion show?

And we're back! The temperatures are cooling and everyone is settling into a routine for the school year. We got our summer fill of water fun, outdoor play, and dodging the heat. I am enjoying my return to a more regular schedule that allows for more creative time for me. I made a hair accessory one Sunday morning to add a little vintage flair to my look. It was perfect. Made of rosettes and felt flowers with tulle netting, it was the perfect complement to a subdued and classic outfit.

I am considering a how-to of this hair pin and wondering if there is any interest?

Hopefully this is our return to some semi-regular programming.

Ever since I moved into this house I have been trying to figure out what to do with the walls. When I was first an apartment dweller, hanging things on the walls was not allowed, painting was not allowed. Basically doing anything other than setting up furniture in a rental is frowned upon. So when I moved into a house that is "mine", meaning me, Husband and littles, I decided it was high-time to put my millions of framed pictures on my walls! I am looking forward to expanding my gallery wall with some artwork and needle-craft (like cross-stitch, modern and cute of course).

Do you want to make a gallery wall of your own? One of the best ways to do this is to lay out your frames on the floor in front of the desired wall in a format that is pleasing to you, take a picture of the "map" for reference and start hanging those frames! Varying sizes tend to look very nice together and adding small personal touches like my small frame with a beautiful cross-stitch in it add so much character to a gallery wall display. Don't worry about making a mistake, you can always take them down and put a tiny bit of white toothpaste in the nail hole and start over.

When I moved into this house there was a set of 4 sagging yellow doors on the front of this shelving. They reminded me of a poorly constructed cabinet you try to make in shop class. The inner 4 corners met and overlapped and the doors swung too far in. They were tired and we decided they could use a break. We sent them into retirement with a joyous adieu!

Now our bookcase showcases our personalities and some serious charm. I sourced some of these books from thrift stores including our local Deseret Industries. Other books are our own collection that had yet to find a shelf to call home. When collecting the books for this project I looked for books with pretty or interesting spines, varying sizes and thickness and age. You want your styled bookshelf to have character and tell a story, you don't want it to look like you went and bought a set of books from your local big box store and put them there. Some must stand upright, others must be stacked in decreasing sizes. Add small decor items that fit the scene and are framed well by the different book sets. You might just find a home for some thing that hadn't been fitting in other places in your home.

Every time I walk through this hallway I feel inspired. Where do you find inspiration?

I am always on the look out for simple ways to decorate my house for different seasons and holidays. I'm still in the early stages of building a foundation of seasonal decor. I also love simple and chic decor and not a lot of clutter. I found these felt tulips at my local dollar store and assembled them for my wall. I love how they take up just the right amount of space and look clean and simple, yet colorful.

I also found these felt eggs at the Dollar Store. I say "these" because there are 3 of them layered together to make it more dimensional and it livens up my front door from the inside! We're always decorating the outside of our front doors for everyone else to see, and this brings some of the fun and pretty inside.

I found this awesome idea for storing ribbon in your craft area. For some people they have a craft room, but for most of us an area is all we get to make our little creative space. Storing ribbon in soda straw dispensers is a great organizing tip and it looks so beautiful! It's easy to access since the dispenser has the bottom disk that will lift up all of your ribbon when you pull up on the top.

I purchase my produce from local co-op and I enjoy the surprise of not knowing what we will be getting that week. This last Saturday I opened the cooler (that my husband went and filled at 7 am) containing our produce and was overjoyed to find tiny fruit! I don't know about you, but I love anything if it's tiny... except for spiders, reptiles, you know...

These pears are the perfect size for my son to grab from the fruit bowl and they just seem so cute!

Where are you finding your produce right now? I find my co-op to be an insane deal and can't compete with it at the grocery store.

I had my first real taste of what Valentines Day will be like when my kids are in school. We attend a play group and they had a Valentine party. We made Valentines for each child based on this idea. And I think they turned out really cute. The dollar store in my area had these cute bouncy balls that look like baseballs, basketballs and soccer balls. They were a hit and my little guy had a blast handing out his fun valentine prize to all his friends!

Being a mom to two boys, I'm on the look-out for fun clothing that is not over-branded, cartoon emblazoned or overly juvenile. This fits the bill.

Found Fun :: Groundhog-Day

Yesterday was Groundhog Day. We miss the warm weather that is normally our friend this time of year. It has been very cold and thwarted our attempts at walking outdoors and playing our favorite games. When I walk with my kids we play our very own version of I-spy. It's "Can you see?" We take turns naming objects that we can see as we walk and the others try to find it. When we find the object in question, it is followed by an excited squeal of "it's right there! right there! right there!" I love it when the weather warms up just enough to be comfortable in a light jacket. We experienced a few days just that warm last week and it was bliss! We walked (I walked, my children "strolled" in our jogging stroller) and we came upon a magical moment. Three wild rabbits hopped across our path and up the hillside in our midst. We were quiet for a few moments talking in hushed tones so that we didn't scare the rabbits. My son had never seen a rabbit in real life before and he was amazed! Rather quickly the rabbits hopped giddily up the hill and were gone. We continued on our walk and tried to spot other interesting things. I love living life through the eyes of my children. Everything is magical again!

I live in a smaller, not so metro area and so my options for shopping are not as vast as they once were. I have turned to a lot of online retailers to find items such as luggage, paper products, clothing, and shoes. I love textiles and being able to meander through a store and see and feel the product I am buying. But with limited resources at my immediate driving disposal, I have found that there are some stores that offer a comfortable and fun shopping experience for the web shopper. What are your favorite online retailers? Where do you like to shop?

I'm off to peruse my favorite shops and later I will post a round-up and review of what I find! One central hub I've found is CSNstores and I'm looking forward perusing their sites! Some of my other favorite sites are Joann's, BananaRepublic, Pottery Barn and Anthro.

Coming in the next few weeks to this little corner of the blogosphere!

Enjoy a little sneak peak of the newly installed cabinets (still without counter tops) that I am completely in love with, especially after living without a kitchen for more than a month! Imagine something this beautiful after living with paper plates, paper cups, disposable silverware and absolutely bare walls and floor for except for the pipe that will lead to a sink for a mere 49 days! It is a first-world problem, I know. But the love I have for this room is comparable only to that of the two little people that I have helped usher into this world and my husband.

This renovation is an adventure and we spend our spare time in the evenings detail painting and using our garage that is doubling as a workshop. It will be beautiful when it is done! And really I am enjoying the beauty in the process!

I was inspired by a guest post over at say YES! to hoboken on felting wool roving into little felted balls for a garland. The look is so soft and luxurious, but modern at the same time. I heard mixed reviews of the Futte Futte shaker (a tool used to make the balls faster) and so I went the traditional route and I'm using a felting needle to do this project. It is therapeutic to use your hands to create something so soft and small, and it takes time. I am making a more spring-like color palette and planning to add this garland to my fireplace mantle. We'll see how it turns out! Meanwhile, the picture above was too cute and inspiring not to share!

Happy New Year to all of you! I hope you will enjoy this opportunity to revision what you want your 2011 to look like. I love the reflection of this time of year and the changes and hope that accompany it. In our house this new year will bring about many new things as we continue to raise our children with as much love and dedication as we can muster!

One of my goals for 2011 is to journal our lives (personally, non-bloggy) and use our pictures to produce a beautiful hard copy memory book for my children. Also to be more "present" with my children and make self-importance a little less important. Love more, smile more, serve more.

I am a huge fan of any hobby, craft, or pass-time that involves fabric, thread, needles and handiwork. I came across The BagSmith in my web-meanderings today and I am in love!!! How cool would it be to work with needles that large and create something like a throw for your sofa that was chunky and eclectic! Let's just say I know what I want for future holiday/celebrations where you receive presents.

I was also overjoyed to find out that there is a local company called Heindselman's that has a location in St. George, Utah - near the city I live in and I can't believe my good fortune to have Heindselman's Too that I can get my yarn and tatting thread fix from whenever I need a pick-me-up.

I love decorating my Christmas tree and I'm hoping that will happen in the next few days as we get ourselves "settled" into our new home. THAT right there is a bombshell people! We bought a home and we are moving ourselves into a construction zone! I will be posting all about the rehab process we have gone through with this home and you will get to see the before and after shots. Are you ready for a DIY renovation? We're right in the thick of it and I am so excited to show all of you!

The holiday season is so busy in a large family like mine, as well as yours I'm sure. We are excited to see family that will be travelling to see us and those that live close by. We are settling into a Christmas gift buying groove for our children and it looks a lot like this: something to wear, something to read, and something to play with... and then the traditional Christmas Eve pajama opening. We all like to look our best on Christmas morning as we stumble from our beds with rats nests in our hair... wearing our new pajamas!

As I was completing my regular "stroll" of etsy the other day, I came across this adorable pair of ballet slipper inspired shoes for baby girls. I am in love with them and would buy a pair for myself if I wasn't afraid of wearing out the soles and if my feet weren't more than a wee bit too big. Let me tell you that if I have a baby girl in the even remotely near future these will be on the very tippy-top of my MUST-purchase list!

Maybe the wishes of my two year old will be met with the next addition to our family (timing to be determined). He said he'd like a "gull baby" and then he said he wanted a "geen gull baby"... I'm pretty sure we would love a girl baby, but we'll pass on a green one.

This season is full of thankfulness for my family. We are thankful for each other and for all the material blessings we are afforded. We are thankful for our relationships and the little things that make life more meaningful. And we are thankful for a transition into real-world employment (post-advanced degree) that has helped us get a firm footing. What a whirlwind the thanksgiving holiday was for us! And now Christmas seems to be bustling up right ahead.

We are thankful for our children and the amazing milestones they achieve. They are amazing and we marvel at every little thing. Today as we drove in the car, I heard a quiet and energetic song floating from the back seat... "Bingo had a name! Bingo had a name!" My son is very interested in all of the songs I knew as a child and sings "row, row your boat merrily down the stream" and "tinkle, tinkle little star... like a diamond in kai!" and with these songs he takes me back to my childhood when these songs were the backing track to my adventures and happiness.

Found Fun :: Bloggy-Boot-Camp :: St-George-Utah

I attended Bloggy Boot Camp this past weekend in St. George, Utah. I was intimidated and nervous at first but I donned my superwoman outfit: a pair of the cutest 3 inch heeled boots, skinny jeans and a cowl-necked sweater. For the first time in a while I felt like a real human being that was dressed, made up, and smelling pretty! I was relieved that everyone there was so approachable and didn't seem to mind when I brought my 7 month old to lunch so he could have his lunch. I think he even charmed Ted Rubin of Opensky who didn't act at all fazed that I breast-fed at the lunch table. I was under cover of course and the 7 month old had a cooler scene to get to once he was happy and full. I spent a day with fellow bloggers learning a lot about what I want to do with my space here on the internet. I am inspired and still entertained. I became a little more comfortable with networking and it was reminiscent of my 9 to 5 working days.

Boot camp was sponsored by Diaperbuds.com, The UPS Store, Seagate and an appearance was made by Opensky (Ted Rubin). I had an enjoyable time at lunch discussing the Opensky platform with Ted, he energized us all (at his table and during his presentation) about social networking and the future of buyer/seller relationships. We heard from Miri Leigh who will soon be found on Food Network and were inspired by her story and her tenacity!

I learned and reconfirmed so much about blogging and my interactions on Twitter and other social networking outlets and I made a myriad of friends and acquaintances. Bloggy Boot Camp was such an enjoyable experience that I'm hoping to attend the Veteran Track at the San Diego camp next year! These women were amazing and shared so much with us. And most of all, they helped us all feel at home and comfortable with whatever we want our blogs to be!

Found Food :: A Doctoral Dissertation :: Bribery with Food

This week has been low on tech time for me, thus only this post so far. My husband defended his doctoral dissertation today and I provided the food for the "event". Don't you think that possibly contentious or even high-stress events are eased with a complimentary presentation of breads, cheeses and grapes? I added the cupcakes from Cupcake Chic (Orem, Utah) to add a little sweet tooth to the spread. In my previous life I catered events and I can't just hide that part of me away when I have the opportunity to share food in a pleasant way.

This time it wasn't in an elegant setting, but I liked adding a little flair to a doctoral dissertation defense!

And whether it was the food or the presenter (I'm sure it had a lot to do with the presenter), my husband passed his defense!

Found Fun :: Pumpkin Sculpting :: Pumpkin Carving

For Halloween the past couple of years we have attempted sculpting pumpkins instead of carving them. This year the results were so much better than last years attempt that I had to show off the creation that we made together ( I helped give some reality to the definition in the nose and eyes.) We used clay sculpting tools from the art store and this year we didn't gut the gourd. We left him with all his seeds intact so that we could use all our energy on sculpting the face. I think he turned out pretty handsome... they both did... :)

This is how I spent my day yesterday, peeling and coring apples and baking two of the most delicious apple pies. They filled my house with a familiar aroma of baking crust and spices. It was a delicious memory-filled day as I reflected on the many times I remember my mother rolling out pie crust and helping her fill them with the various types of filling for the holidays and other family occasions. My little boy "helped" me roll out the dough and watched the crust to make sure it was safe while I fluted the edge and transported the other filled pie to the oven. We had a wonderful time baking pies and canning the remainder of our applesauce and I am now officially done canning apples for the season.

Now that I don't have 6 orchard boxes of apples in my kitchen I can do something else, like go outside and play with my children or crochet or sew or sleep... the list is endless.

I always struggled to find nail polish that would stay on my nails. I have nail beds that naturally repel polish and so it was hard to find a polish that wouldn't peel off. But I finally found that if I use OPI polish (due to the professional salon quality) I get more wear than I ever have out of 1 application. I have also fallen in love with alot of their darker shades. Below are some of my favorites and the names just make me love them even more!

Found Fun :: Kids Halloween Costumes

Last year was a rough year for dressing up our son. I was pregnant and lethargic and sick. So he went to our family halloween party "dressed up" as a little boy. Sad I know. But this year we came up with a really cute concept that was sweet and creative and involved our new addition.

Our house has a curious monkey named george and his friend, the man with the yellow hat. I found the monkey costume at our local costco and the myriad pieces of the "The Man" costume were found and purchased at Savers Thrift Store in Orem, Utah. I'm not a huge fan of scary or gross costumes so this hit the mark for me. I just hope I can keep my kids in the creative vein and not venture into the frightful stuff as they get older.

Found Fashion :: Halloween Glamour and Steampunk Costumes

I attended a pre-Halloween party while on vacation and the hostess and one of her accomplices had the most amazing and glamorous costumes. The hostess was adorned as a "Steam punk" and tended the bar of mocktails and Italian sodas throughout the evening. I absolutely love each entire look! I concentrated on rounding up the costumes for my children who attended as curious George and the man with the yellow hat. I'll post pictures soon of the little ones. But for now enjoy these pictures from our very glamorous and Victorian Halloween celebration.

I had an emergency preparedness workshop this last week and I was in charge of centerpieces for the event. It was a workshop on sanitation and making emergency "potty"s. The centerpieces of plungers, toilet paper and a papercraft outhouse turned out soooo cute. After the event we raffled them off and sent them home with the attendees.

We didn't know we were feeling in the mood for mediterranean cuisine this past weekend until we saw this cafe as we were driving around St. George, Utah. On a whim we decided to stop for an early lunch and see what the city of St. George had to offer in the gyro and pita & hummus arena.

Let me tell you this was a divine find! I love greek food and I have not found anything this authentic and well done in a long time! We ordered pita & hummus (which came with extra olive oil and kalamata olives) and for our main dishes we had a gyro(hero) and kabobs. The food was so fresh and the ingredients were right on point! We had Baklava and bread pudding for dessert. The Baklava was perfect and the bread pudding was served decadently drenched in a hot cream with golden raisins and a perfect crust on top. YUM!

We'll be going back to enjoy this again and if you are in the St. George area you should try it too! They have been in St. George for 25 years!

I am so inspired by the toys at Smallable. The clean lines and organic and simple feel are so charming. I know that my toddler would love to play make-believe with these toys. Although beyond my budget, they appeal to me from a design point of view. How much would you pay for design-concious toys? Is it worth it?

Dinner at my house is often a question of "what should we make?" (at 5 p.m.) or "what's in the freezer?" I have a feeling that the book Time for Dinner would make that question a little less intimidating and the resulting dinner a little more sensible and family friendly. We have started enjoying our local food co-op where we can get a fruit and vegetable basket, and often other things like 9-grain bread, sourdough bread, granola, and cases of fruit for canning/preserving. It is quite a fun and rewarding experience to feel like you are on Iron Chef every week when you pick up your produce basket. Last week I was able to go and help distribute the produce in the early morning and the comraderie and fulfillment that I felt was so refreshing. Do you have a food co-op in your area? Does it influence how healthy your meals and snacks are?

I found these on the Ikea website and have added them to my shopping list for when I visit Ikea next. They expand the toy options that I'd like to keep around instead of the plastic toys that get broken. We are getting ready to clean out the toy bin and replace some things with health-concious, thoughtful, and soft (for the sake of the baby being a target of thrown toys) items. I'm looking forward to these purchases. They just might appear in our house around Christmas time this year.

I have an addiction to Paul Frank. I buy anything I can excuse that is PF for my children. It's a problem, I know. But it's just so darn cute! I have only boys at my house, so you know it becomes a problem when I feel the need to buy PF items for a girl just in case they don't have them when I finally find a girl among my genetics. I buy most things at TJ Maxx and found the shirt above there for just a few dollars. But the other day I had to venture out and get a set of potty training underpants for my son. DesignMom had featured some from PF that she bought at back to school and I decided they were a must-have for potty training. Even if the toddler doesn't care, it will make it more fun for me.

Found Fashion - Relaxed Weekend Wear

Sometimes I get to spend the weekend participating in what I consider camping. This consists of no tents, running water, a refrigerator and access to some semblance of a toilet that doesn't include the words "out" and "house". My grandparents cabin that is still in family fulfills the requirements and the setting is absolutely beautiful! We have campfires on the property and hike all around the mountain. We visit the Lodge at the lake and listen to the radio and cook where my grandmother cooked. It's nostalgic and peaceful, and full of love. When I go to the lake I like to bring along clothes that make me feel relaxed and comfortable, but for me that doesn't include sweatpants and tennis shoes - spurs get into those things and you'll feel them for months even after a good wash or cleaning. So here is an example of what I like to take for a relaxed weekend at the lake.

These boots are an amazing mix of a cowboy boot but a casual lower heel boot. Plus Franco Sarto makes some of the most amazingly comfortable shoes on earth! I wore a pair of 3 inch heels by FS and they were the most comfortable thing I've worn that is that tall.

This is by far my favorite Gap jean. Its the "easy straight destructed jeans". I have them in a medium dark wash and I am hoping Gap comes out with them again. I love the relaxed fit and straight leg.

I'm a sucker for a great sweater with structure and interest but comfort to boot. This type of sweater is a staple in my cool weather wardrobe.

Moving into a new apartment has its perks, like when the old furniture won't fit, you have to find new furniture. I was in search of a couch at a reasonable price and stopped by DownEast Home. I found a beautiful 68" sofa like the ones pictured that was missing the cushion covers and was going for a very reasonable $250. I debated and looked elsewhere while this piece was on hold for me, and in the end I brought it home to my humble home and it looks FABULOUS! I can't wait to get the plum cushion covers done to complement the brown upholstery. I've even taken a nap on the couch and it is ultra-comfy! I'll post before and after of my own couch later.

This was another food shoot that I did and I could have just sat and stared at this beautiful food. It tasted good too, but I only allowed myself a few bites so as not to inflict to much pain on my figure. This chocolate mousse is a recipe that my sister got from a woman that hosted her in France. The recipe is written all in french and we included it in the pictures for some fun interest. I feel tempted to print these and put them up in my kitchen, but if I do I might end up eating chocolate a little too often.
